The Afa Gallery’s opening exhibition for the year 2008 features the work of two artists in an exhibit entitled ‘Adagio’. There will be an opening reception on First Friday, January 4, 6-8 PM. There will be a gallery talk with the artists prior to the opening on Friday, January 4, at 5:30pm. The exhibit will run from January 4-26.

The title of the show, ‘Adagio’ was chosen because, in addition to it being a musical term, adagio describes a balancing act between two performers, usually acrobats, but in this case, artists Bill Landau and Al Pierce. The artists bring two highly different mediums together, hopefully in a state of balance. Bill Landau’s paintings incorporate “. . . some poetry, some prose, some mischief, and some nonsense�. He works with acrylic, oil, and block-printing techniques. Al Pierce, a long-time photographer, has created a series incorporating circus imagery for this exhibition.

Both Landau and Pierce are former residents of the local area who moved away approximately twenty years ago. However, both have retained ties to the area, and are now returning for their inaugural exhibit together.

The Paulukonis Studio, home of custom designed stained glass, is providing workshops.

Introduction to Stained Glass Lead Techniques
Learn basic techniques of stained glass work in the artists’ studio. You will design a small project, cut the glass, assemble with lead, solder, and cement. At the end of five weeks you will have completed a small panel.
Five Thursdays: January 17–February 14, 2008, 7:00–9:00 pm

Introduction to Stained Glass Copper Foil Method
Learn basic techniques of stained glass work. You will design small free-form piece, cut the glass, apply copper foil and solder the project. At the end of five weeks you will have completed a small piece to hang in a window.
Five Tuesdays: March 4–April 1, 2008, 7:00–9:00 pm
$125 for either introductory class includes basic materials and use of tools. Students furnish an apron, felt-tip pen or glass-marker, pencil, and ruler.
Each class limited to six students. Registration deadline: one week prior to start of class.

Advanced Stained Glass Instruction
Advanced students are welcome to work on an original design at their own pace during introductory classes. $125 plus glass.

Private Instruction
May be arranged. $ /hour.

Retreat With the Arts
Three days of glass, painting, music, and prayer at a rural retreat center.

The STAR Gallery at the Steamtown Mall is presenting Featured Artist Kenneth Kenowski on December 8th, 12noon - 6pm. He will introduce the public to the Art of Scrimshaw.
Come over to learn more about this rare American Folk form of art. Ken is a recipient of a grant from Lackawanna County Council of the Arts. He has been featured on TV, invited to many National Art Shows, and has been mentioned in many local publications.

Creativity flows through the use of iron oxide found in local riverbeds.

Artists for Art and the Afa Gallery, in partnership with the Eastern Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation, has made creative use of the iron oxide pigment collected from local riverbeds. Supported by a grant through the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts-Scranton Area Foundation, seven area high school students worked with book artist Ivana Pavelka for five sessions at Keystone College and AFA Gallery and created accordion books using the pigment in their artwork. Robert Hughes, AML Program Manager of ECAMR, introduced the students to the reclamation and transformation process of the abandoned mine drainage and showed them how it becomes a pigment that is friendly and useful to artists. For the following art-making sessions, Ivana and the students explored the artistic uses of the pigment as well as the cultural and historical implications of the material itself.
Mixed media artist Elizabeth Parry-Faist worked with the students on including photographic images in their books, and poet Jennifer Hill-Kaucher helped them add meaningful text. The finished accordion books show the use of the pigment in mixed media, paint and ink and will be on display at the AFA Gallery on December 7th at 6 p.m. as part of Scranton’s First Friday Art Walk.

The Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation supports partnerships between visiting artists and non-profit organizations engaged in community-based creative projects. Afa member, Marc Schimsky, and his son Matt will be having a a father and son exhibit entitled ‘Two Generations of Artists’ at the Orazio Salati Gallery, 205 State St, Binghamton. There will be an opening on December 7 from 6 to 9 PM. The works include paintings, drawings and mixed media. The exhibit will continue until 1/25/08.

The Northeast Photography Club will hold its annual member exhibit at the Afa Gallery from November 15th through November 26. There will be an opening reception on Friday, November 16th, from 6 to 8 PM.

The Skylake Gallery in Fleetville will be featuring its Holiday 2007 exhbit from Nov. 16 until December 30, 2007. There will be a reception and raffle on Friday, November 16 from 6-9 PM. The exhibit features, among others, the works of Afa members Earl Lehman and Nan Burti. Regular gallery hours are on Saturday and Sunday from 1-5 PM.

Windsor Whip Works Art Gallery in Windsor, New York, (near Binghamton) is issuing a call for equine artists in all media–painting, pastel, watercolor, sculpture, mixed media, etc. We are planning an art show in March to benefit Stable Movements a division of Southern Tier Alternative Therapies. Stable Movements is an organization that provides hippotherapy and theraputic riding to people with disabilities.
