What are you doing Columbus Day Weekend?

If you’re an art lover and have a car and a few friends who would enjoy traveling around a beautiful rural county looking at autumn color, eating good food, talking to creative people and perhaps going home with a new piece of original art, you should attend the 12th Annual Artists’ Open House Weekend, October 11, 12 and 13!

This self-guided tour to nineteen locations throughout Susquehanna County will introduce you to the studios of twenty-six artists, whose work ranges from traditional watercolors, to sculpture in wood and marble, to oils, acrylics, collage, stone-wall building, and pottery – both functional and decorative. All studios are open from 10am – 6pm daily. Monday is designated “Demo Day” when many of the artists will show the public how they do what they do.

New to the tour this year are Pamela Earnshaw Kelly, a celebrated artist whose Raku-fired clay sculptures reflect her Susquehanna County roots, and George and Ben Manns, father and son woodworkers who create artistic, functional home furnishings.

How do you start? There are 15,000 brochures floating around at numerous locations throughout Susquehanna County and beyond. There is also a website, www.artiststour.com, where you can read about the tour and download a map. You can also start driving around and come across a bright pink arrow – they lead the way to all studios. Lost? Just ask someone – this is a huge, fun-filled, county-wide event and people are very friendly.

The Artists’ Open House Weekend has many sponsors who see the value of art and who also see the economic contribution that the tour makes to the county, attracting hundreds of people who need food, gas and lodging over a three day period. The artists are honored to know these sponsors and hope you will patronize them while you are here.

Participating artists also give back to the county by donating a portion of their sales to three county nature areas – Woodbourne Forest and Wildlife Preserve in Dimock, Florence Shelly Preserve in Thompson, and Friends of Salt Springs Park in Silver Lake Township.

So if your Columbus Day Weekend isn’t already booked, try something new. Meet great people, see great art, and enjoy a beautiful county – all less than a tank of gas away.
