On-line Print Sale at Camerawork Gallery

Ξ October 29th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ ALL POSTS, OPPORTUNITIES |

Camerawork Gallery launches its first on-line sale of photographs with prints by Ivana Pavelka, Michael Poster and Rolfe Ross at:
http://www.cameraworkgallery.org/print_sales/

The proceeds of the sale will go toward supporting the efforts of the
gallery. These are original photos printed to archival standards and signed
by the photographers. The pictures, as offered, are limited to editions of
20 each in an 11″ x 14″ overall print size and are only $30.00 each
including shipping.

A note about Camerawork operations: Ivana Pavelka, Rolfe Ross and Michael Poster are the managers of Camerawork. They organize, publicize and hang the shows; they receive no operating revenues or compensation other than the satisfaction of knowing that they have helped bring some good photography to the city of Scranton. Sales revenues are split between the exhibiting artist and the hosting gallery: Marquis Art and Frame receives a 40% commission on work
sold at the gallery; the photographer gets the balance of the sale. In
addition to handling transactions, the hosting gallery staff also make sure
that Camerawork is clean, accessible, well-lit and open to the public 6
days each week. Marquis is also the perfect place to have the Camerawork
prints matted and framed.

They are not asking for donations. Rather, they are proposing a
mutually beneficial transaction: you can own fine quality prints by
well-known, local photographers at unusually low prices; at the same time
your purchase will help Camerawork bring more great photography exhibits to
the city of Scranton.

ANNUAL AFA HOLIDAY AUCTION

Ξ October 16th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ ALL POSTS |

The annual AFA Auction will be held at the AFA Gallery on Saturday, November 22, 2001, beginning at 6:00 P. M. There will be wonderful music provided by friends of Doug Smith. Elegant hors d’oeuvres and desserts will be available, together with champagne. There will be an open bar. The cost is $25 per person.

The featured artist this year is Barbara Remington, who has donated the raffle piece appearing on the invitation. It is a pen and ink drawing entitled “Miss Bewilda Spindrift”. Barbara Remington illustrated the original American editions of J. R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’. Raffle tickets cost $1.00 apiece and are available at the gallery.

Approximately forty-five works by AFA artists will be sold by live auction at the event. The works will be of all media and styles, and are works of some of the finest artists in northeastern Pennsylvania. The Auction can be an opportunity to acquire fine work at great savings.

The auctioneer this year will be Ken Rivenberg, who has been a great and popular success in appearances at the Auction in recent years. His charm and infectious enthusiasm make the event a fun one for all. Ken has his own auction gallery – Rivenburg Auctions - in nearby Nicholson with weekly auctions.

Decorations will be provided by Linda Welles, and although the theme has not yet been announced, flowers are always the highlight. The centerpieces will be sold at the end of the evening. One year the serving table floral centerpiece was spirited away by James Penedos, only to reappear as the subject of one of his colorful paintings!

The gourmet food effort will be led by Ann Marie Noone, Sue Penedos and Gretchan Ludders. Volunteers should contact Ann Marie at 222-4334.

The annual AFA Holiday Auction is the highlight of AFA’s year in two respects. Firstly, it is the most fun event at AFA, with great food, lively music, good company and the opportunity to acquire fine art at a festive occasion. Secondly, it is the financial backbone for AFA, serving as the primary fund-raiser for Artists For Art so that we can carry on our many activities.

A New Paradigm: Recent Work by Ron Ehrlich at the Sordoni

Ξ October 16th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ ALL POSTS, LOCAL EXHIBITIONS |

The Sordoni Art Gallery will open the exhibition, A New Paradigm: Recent Work by Ron Ehrlich on Friday, October 17, with an opening reception on Friday, October 17, from 5-8 p.m. in conjunction with Wilkes-Barre’s Third Friday Celebration. The exhibition will be on view through Friday, December 12, 2008.

This exhibition features paintings by American painter Ron Ehrlich. Ron Ehrlich is known for achieving rich surfaces and subtleties of tone melding the techniques of vessel-making with the spontaneity and vitality of action painting. Working on panel, wielding a blowtorch as well as a brush, the brilliant colorist creates an art both vigorous and contemplative.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1954, Ron Ehrlich received his BFA from Connecticut College in 1976. In 1979, he traveled to Japan to the Joji Yamasita monastery to study the art of Bizen pottery making. Intending to stay for five weeks, he stayed for five years. He returned to the US and studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and the Rhode Island School of Design. Ehrlich applied expertise in the techniques of three-dimensional work to two-dimensional painting resulting in a remarkable and unique body of work.

“THE EVERHART ROCKS”

Ξ October 16th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ ALL POSTS, LOCAL EXHIBITIONS |

The Everhart Museum invites you to “The Everhart Rocks”, a new exhibit entitled THE BEATLES; PHOTOGRAPHS BY HARRY BENSON, and the re-opening of the newly installed Rocks and Minerals Gallery.
There will be a benefit preview on November 8, 2008, from 6 to 8 PM. The cost is $30 per person.
THE BEATLES; PHOTOGRAPHS BY HARRY BENSON takes us back to a time when four cheeky lads from Liverpool forever changed popular music. Nearly 45 years after the Beatles began the British invasion with their historic Feb. 9, 1964 appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” the music world still stands in awe of their impact, and more importantly, their sound. This special exhibition celebrates what many consider to be the most influential event not only in rock ‘n’ roll history, but for American society as well.
The Rocks & Minerals Gallery reinterprets and presents a new and improved version of the “Rocks Room,” a well-known and beloved exhibit that was retired more than a decade ago. Created in the 1950s, the original “Rocks Room” was a small closet gallery featuring “glow-in-the-dark” rocks. It was a must-see experience for children from throughout Northeast Pennsylvania who visited during the 1960s and 1970s, and remained the most popular element of the Museum into the 1980s. The reopening of this permanent gallery cements the Everhart Museum’s commitment to featuring more of its natural sciences collection and awakening the wonder and magic of museums in the child still found in all of us.
