‘Pop Mandala’, An exhibition of paintings by Steve Kursh

‘Pop Mandala’, an exhibition of paintings by Steve Kursh, will take place at the AFA Gallery from January 2 until January 24. The opening reception will be on Friday January 2nd (First Friday), from 6 to 9pm, with an artist talk at 5:30pm.
Opening days are Thursday, Friday and Saturday 12-5pm. The AFA Gallery is located at 514 Lackawanna Ave., Scranton.
Steve Kursh describes the show as follows. “Mythologies, social philosophies and religious beliefs have long been the basis for a sizeable portion of humankind’s output of art. In my contribution to that output, I have come to the mandala as the appropriate vehicle to present my thoughts.
Mandalas have existed in all cultures as a sacred place - be it natural or constructed - to remember The One in control of the universe. It is a place to perform a certain ritual or practice, or for the use of a great teacher or mystic. In it’s external representation a mandala is a diagram of the cosmos. Internally it is meant to be a guide to the psycho-physical practices of the believer. In that sense, my use of images from a wide range of sources, all part of my physical existence, is an effort at finding some residue of the sanctity of the universe and it’s potential in us. The mandala is most recognizable as an element of Hinduism and Buddhism, belief systems whose underlying themes are dominated by the possibility of world transformation and individual liberation. In the same light, the purpose of art is to define or make a blueprint for a more ideal way of seeing this world.
What does all this mean? Nothing.
What is the message? It’s about enlightenment. After the formal concerns and physical aspects of a painting are considered, the only thing that makes any difference is your experience. Sometimes it’s there and sometimes it’s not, but enlightenment is where a painting wants to take you.”

DRAWING SOCIALS AT THE AFA GALLERY

The Drawing Socials combine a drawing group with a live musical performance - the performers being the subject as well as the entertainment. The music ranges from - and merges - rock, classical, jazz, hip-hop, gypsy, folk, country, blues, electronic, and the experimental and avant-garde. Call For Entries - “In the Light of Italy” at Wyalusing’s Blue Heron Gallery

The Blue Heron Gallery in Wyalusing is presenting an exhibit inspired by
the light of Italy entitled “In the Light of Italy”, Our Greco- Roman Heritage. In part, the exhibit is inspired by a show that took place in 1996 at the Nation Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, which centered on the 19th century French Painter, Corot and the first group of plien-aire artists to paint directly from observation while in Italy. The exhibit here in Wyalusing takes that theme, to now showcase contemporary artists and poets interpretations of all things Italian. This exhibit will however expand the theme to embrace the Greco-Roman tradition and neo-classic thrust of Renaissance artists, humanists, writers, sculptors, architects, politicians, and scientist. The energizing myth of the renaissance was a return to the study of life and to record the beauty of the world with a newly invigorated sense of the dignity of mankind. The technical abilities of those quatrocento artists expanded as did their vision- hence this show is somewhat of an homage.
The net cast by the exhibit theme is quite wide and may include contemporary and widely disparate sources, such as our Greek Revival buildings here in the USA or the actual land of Tuscany or works inspired by Renaissance and classical artists.
The exhibit will present a catalog of the show with many of the works reproduced in the publication along with the written work of regional poets. Poets have the opportunity of using many classical or renaissance writers as an inspiration or simply submitting poetic reportages of their readings or travels in the Mediterranean area. One could think of the precedence set by American writers D.H. Lawrence, Samuel Clemens and others or ancient writers like Cicero, Virgil, Livy and Homer.
The visual art submissions should be sent in j-peg form via e-mail to bkeeler@epix.net, or on a disc or with 35 mm slides.  The entry form available on the gallery web site should be completed and sent in with the$30 entry fee, check payable to Blue Heron Italian Light Show. The exhibit will take place August 20 to November 30, 2009.
The poets may submit up five works as well, via e-mail to bkeeler@epix.net. The fee for poets is $20 and that should be sent by mail or dropping it off at the gallery. The deadline for submissions for both artists and poets is June 15, 2009,
but early entries are encouraged to facilitate the compilation of the catalog.  A special opening and poetry reading will be at the gallery on Friday August 20 with live music and dancing too.
For information about the show visit the gallery web site at www.blueheronart.org or call 570-746-4922.  Blue Heron Gallery, 121 Main St- PO Box 813, Wyalusing.

SPECIAL CALL TO ARTISTS THE SCRANTON CIVIC BALLET COMPANY

The Scranton Civic Ballet Company has invited members of AFA to exhibit artwork at the Scranton Cultural Center in conjunction with one of their dance presentations in April 2009. There will be a room set up to exhibit and sell artwork.
The interesting news is that they would like to select an image that can be
developed into a dance along with relative music. The artwork may be set upon a screen as a backdrop to the dance. The work does not have to be dance related, so use your imagination.
For all those interested in presenting your work for review for the dance
piece, please bring the original piece to AFA on January 10, 2009 between 12 and 4pm. Pick up will be at 5pm.
Additional information will be coming your way when we have the specifics
about the April exhibit at the Cultural Center. It should be a great experience and a lot of fun.

EXHIBIT - US ROUTE 6 IN ART AND POETRY

The Blue Heron Gallery in Wyalusing, PA is organizing an exhibit of art based on our continental highway that runs through this part of Pennsylvania and on across the country from Cape Cod to California. The show will run from March 15 to May 1, 2009 and the opening is March 27.

The exhibit in Wyalusing is open to all artists over 18 and there is no restriction as to size, media, date of completion, or style. Interested artists may submit up to five pieces that relate to Route 6 and the towns and landscapes it passes through, but keeping the highway somehow as an important aspect of the images. The purpose of the exhibit is to highlight the beauty of the land and historical uniqueness of the villages as this highway traverses through middle America. A subtext to exhibit’s purpose would be to preserve the special character of rural and urban life and perhaps curtail sprawl or misguided urban renewal and development that threatens the quality of our American scenes. For information about the show visit the gallery web site at www.blueheronart.org or call 570-746-4922.
