‘ENLIGHTENED DOGMA II’: PHOTOGRAPHS BY CURTIS SALONICK

‘Enlightened Dogma II”, an exhibit of photographs by Curtis Salonick, will be shown at the AFA Gallery from March 5-28. There will be an opening reception on First Friday, March 6th, from 6-9 PM, with an artist talk at 5:30 PM. As a special treat, you are invited to be a part of Curtis’s ‘Birthday Photo’ at 7:30 PM at the reception.
Curtis is a self-taught, freelance photographer who has always been fascinated by art, with its creativity and discipline. His artistic direction began when he received his first 35 millemeter camera at age 16. He soon moved from 35 mm. to medium format, developing his skills both in the darkroom and in the field. Not content with traditional aspects of photography, he wanted to find a more creative outlet to express himself.
His images revolve around the interaction with the model. Most of the images taken are not totally themselves; they are just one component of several images used to complete a final, dramatic image. The process - developed over the years of searching – uses black-and-white, 4″ x 5″ duplicating film to transfer individual parts of an original negative to create a multi-layered negative, from which the final prints are made. The style that results he likes to refer to as Gothic Surrealism.
Curt describes it as follows: “Photography, long seen as the depiction or reflection of what is, provides for me the starting point of what is a creative process that transforms and manipulates several simple images into a final composite. My work is an on-going exploration of what I view as the four pillars that support the Human Condition. They are:
#1 – LIFE That which defines our physical being in the present.
#2 – DEATH Defined by the end of our physical being, an unknown of which we posses no comprehension, so we can neither accept nor deny it. Therefore we mourn it.
#3 – SEXUALITY The driving, dominant force that perpetuates the species.
#4 – RELIGION The golden parachute: a means to an end, a reason for being, a flicker of hope in the Great Unknown, defining man from birth to death and beyond.”

‘THE DESTROYED PRINT’ at Linder Gallery at Keyston

In 1980, Jeff Russell, a New York artist, nearly suffered his own destruction when his use of sprayed molten metal resulted in a serious respiratory illness. Unable to work in his normal fashion, he produced an edition of silkscreened prints of himself in a martyr-like pose. He sent copies of this work to one hundred artist with the request that they destroy the print and return it to him. Fifty-seven artists did just that, and the result became the exhibit known as ‘The Destroyed Print”. The returned works, many from some of the most recognized and lauded artists of the era, each provide an insight into the problem of how to create something new through the destruction of something given.
The Opening Reception will take place at the Linder Gallery at Keystone College, La Plume, PA Sunday, February 8, 4-6PM. The exhibit will continue through March 8.

BlueStone Gallery opens in Milford

Borrowing its name from the bedrock of Pike County, BlueStone Gallery has opened its doors on East Ann Street in Milford. Gallery owner Robert Levine will exhibit both fine and functional art, and plans for the gallery to become a center for intimate cultural events in Milford.
Levine, along with his operating partner David Greenbaum, who is himself a nationally recognized potter, have selected 12 artists for their opening exhibition. These artists include painters, sculptors, a wood turner, a glass artist, a blacksmith, a clothing-designing couple as well as Greenbaum.
Levine, an intellectual property attorney in New York, and his wife, the writer Suzanne Braun Levine, have spent weekends in the region for over 30 years. Inspired by the creation of the Hotel Fauchere, Levine found himself spending more and more time in Milford. “I found that I wanted to become part of the Milford community, involved and committed not just a visitor” said Levine. “The gallery is an opportunity to combine my interests and abilities and to contribute to the cultural life of Milford.”
Levine and Greenbaum intend to edit their exhibition regularly and to continuously add new artists. They are offering regional artists an opportunity not just to show their work but to become part of the new BlueStone community. “What most surprised me,” said Levine, “was that of all the artists we selected for our first exhibition, none of them knew any of the others.”
BlueStone Gallery is located at 104 East Ann Street in Milford and will be open Friday through Sunday every week from 11:00 a.m. through 6:00 p.m.

Call For Artists - Goggleworks in Reading

‘Landscape and Industry’ is a juried exhibition of artwork created to depict and explore the relationship and interaction between the natural and manufactured world. The term “landscape art” often calls to mind pastoral scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests. “Industry” introduces technological change into the environment, describing manmade structures and artificial constructions. Each artist’s work explores the complex relationship between natural landscapes and deliberate creations. Landscape & Industry gives artists the opportunity to explore their own interpretation of how modern industrialization has changed the way artists view the traditional natural landscape scene. In the first floor Cohen Gallery.
The entry deadline is Monday, Feb. 2. The exhibit will be May 10, through June 14, 2009
Juror:Matthew Daub
