Transformations 2008: Icons & Imagery at the Everhart

‘Transformations 2008: Icons & Imagery’ runs from May 7-July 27, 2009, at the Everhart Museum in Scranton, and features studio art quilts by 32 artists from nine countries. Each of the artist members of Studio Art Quilt Associates represented in ‘Transformations 2008: Icons & Imagery’ used the idea of an icon, with its ability to elicit symbolic meaning beyond the object represented, as a starting point for the quilts in this exhibit. The artists work chosen for the exhibit feature a diverse range of imagery, all of which use what are iconic pieces, including Byzantine icons themselves, symbols from ancient world cultures, the American landscape, feminine pop culture “icons,” and cultural motifs taken from oft reproduced media imagery. The quilts included in this exhibit feature diverse styles of textile and fiber arts, reflecting time-honored quilting, sewing, and embroidery techniques as well as less traditional techniques such as printing, photography, collage and inclusion of found objects in and on the quilts. The exhibit which is on loan from Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) has toured internationally and was curated by Jeannette DeNicolis Meyer.

Bricolage: REBIRTH at GreenBeing, 334 Adams Ave. Scranton, PA

Bricolage: REBIRTH - a Visual Concepts Spring 2009 Class Exhibition a tGreenBeing
Environmentally and Socially Responsible, 334 Adams Ave. Scranton, PA 18503 April 3 through April 28, 2009.
OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, April 3, 2009, 6-9pm
Bricolage: REBIRTH started as an assignment given by Ted Michalowski to his Visual Concepts class at Marywood University. This is an exhibition of the 14 solutions by the 14 students. The assignment was to create a bricolage dimensional work, incorporating a free-wheeling use of materials, the theme being Rebirth. This theme brought interpretations from the secular to sacred, social to seasonal, recycling to resurrection, ecological to enigmatic.
Materials were gathered ad hoc by each individual student, assorted finds such as cardboard, plastic, aluminum, wood, cloth, tin cans, nails, string, etc. These scrounged materials were manipulated so that they no longer resembled that of their original purpose, in order to create something much more beautiful. That’s bricolage.
This way of working was introduced to Ted Michalowski by his bricolage mentor at Syracuse University’s ISDP-MA Illustration Masters Program, the master bricoleur, Gene Hoffman— handy-man, tinkerer, trash-talker, dumpster-diver, pick-of-the-litter, neotoma cinerea, the conceptual blockbuster. Gene Hoffman passed away in 2005, however his life renews, as his methods, through generations of students inspired.

“WHAT IT IS” - An Abstract Art Photography Installation

“WHAT IT IS” - An Abstract Art Photography Installation at Camerawork Gallery, located downstairs at the Marquis Gallery, 513 Center Street, Scranton, PA 18503
Fine Art Photography by Carl Berg
May 1st, 2009 thru June 2nd, 2009
Opening Reception Friday, May 1st, 2009 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
“My artistic task is to notice and reflect: finding the artful in the ordinary, the depth and complexity in the superficial and the detail in the unnoticed, a parallel process to my professional psychological pursuits. My photographic images are intended to diminish the distinction between the world of the photographic image and that of other visually artistic productions. Through the freezing and recording of a moment in time between the documenter and the subject, my images intend to evoke a narrative about the subject, which the viewer can identify, engage or perhaps intuit in a uniquely interesting and individualistic way. The task for me is to identify elements of expression in subjects not ordinarily seen as communicative and thereby project and impose the observer’s understanding and relationship onto this otherwise blank and unexpressive screen. My images are not premeditated, constructed or creatively lighted, but are expressive of the spontaneous nature of that instant opportunity, unlikely to be presented again. ”

Everhart Museum - Transformations 2008: Icons & Imagery

Opening May 7, 2009 ‘Transformations 2008: Icons & Imagery’
Icons & Imagery is composed of 32 contemporary quilts from nine countries. The exhibit is traveling internationally and was previously shown in England and South Africa. Each of the artist members of Studio Art Quilt Associates represented in Transformations ‘08: Icons & Imagery used the idea of an icon, with its ability to elicit symbolic meaning beyond the object represented, as a starting point for the quilts in this exhibit. German textile expert Rudolf Smend, who served as the sole juror of this exhibit, chose work he felt “focused primarily on artistic originality, perfect craftsmanship and innovation,” while providing a new take on the meaning of iconography through the use of fresh imagery and interpretations. The exhibit was produced by Studio Art Quilt Associates. For more information on the exhibit, contact the Everhart Museum at 570-346-7186 or email: general.information@everhart-museum.org.

Annual Susquehanna River Canoe Trip

The Annual Susquehanna River Canoe Trip (originally an AFA event with Gary Grossman in 1992) will be on the July 25-26 weekend this year. We will be doing the traditional route between Ulster and Wyalusing (Terrytown Access). We start sometime around noon on Saturday at the bridge in Ulster and spend the night at the mouth of the Towanda Creek. Then we paddle on down to Terrytown the next day with a stop for lunch at French Azilum or Standing Stone. The total distance is about 25 miles with most of that distance done on Sunday. We usually finish late in the afternoon on Sunday. You may come for just Saturday or Sunday or do the whole trip. Bring your instruments for playing around the campfire and art supplies for painting and drawing. We leave some of our instruments etc near the campsite so our boats are not overloaded. Of course bring all your own gear, food and
