Stan Sperlak, who works in pastels, and Michael B. Harris, who works in prints and paintings, will be featured at the Laura Craig Galleries in Scranton for the month of October. There will be a First Friday opening reception on October 2 from 6 - 8 PM.
Harris says about his work, “The festival of coloration of these woods has heightened by colorist sensibilites. The rich verdant canopies, the vibrant fall foliage, and the nakedness of hardwood dtrees in winter, reveal to me what seems to mirror the human experience: the sense of gain and loss, lifeand death, the letting go process of life itself, and the ever renewing cycle of life in nature.”
Spelak speaks about one of his pastels - ‘Sunset on the Marsh’ - “The South Jersey landscape doesn’t reveal itself the way a scenic overlook calls attention to a grand view across a river. It doesn’t build in suspense like when seee the Rocky Mountains in the distance. But this corner of the world is just as beautiful. In subtle ways the marshes will move you, the oceans will renew you, and the forests will engage you. When you cross into this southernmost peninsula of new Jersey, it is different and has been an allure to many artists over the years.”
The exhibit will continue through October 31.

“Keystone College has produced so many extraordinary alumni in the visual arts that an exhibit such as this is a small way to acknowledge their achievements,” said Drake Gómez, director of the Linder Gallery. “On the other hand, it is an exhibit that is long overdue, and I think will be as exceptional a group show as each alumnus is exceptional individually.”

These are a collection of earnest, visual questions about how one relates to the unfamiliar, while weaving in and out of multiple spaces and lives. Please accept all omissions of written fact and documentation as my sincerest compliment to you, the viewer, and your insatiable appetite for a bread trail rather than a sledgehammer.”
A non-profit community development corporation based in South Scranton is in the process of finishing the rehabilitation of an elementary school in South Side - the Harriet Beecher Stowe School - and expects to be finished with the renovations in several weeks. The building will contain eighteen apartment units. They have maintained the historical integrity of the building. They are currently in the process of choosing furnishings for the building, and thought that it would be a great idea to feature the works of local artists in the hallways and common areas of the building and wanted to know if AFA members would consider donating pieces (paintings, photos, prints, posters etc.) or selling at a reduced cost for that purpose. They would especially like to include works that depict the local landscapes/cityscapes and subjects of an historic nature pertaining to the City of Scranton, although all offers would be considered and appreciated. There will be an open house at the end of September and this would provide for those who donate an opportunity to showcase their work. For further information, contact Nicole at the Gallery - 969-1040.
