Ashcan Humanists: John Sloan and Jerome Myers
February 5 through March 12, 2010
During the first decades of the twentieth century, artists John Sloan (1871-1951) and Jerome Myers (1867-1940) lived and painted in New York City. Turning their attention to subjects such as immigrants shopping from push carts on the Lower East Side and families asleep on city rooftops, they were among the first to challenge what had been considered the proper subjects for art at the time. Soon recognized as painters of the Ashcan School, the artists developed a lasting friendship, grounded in their shared human-ist ideals and their love of the city.
The Hope Horn Gallery at the University of Scranton will be hosting an exhibition entitled ‘Ashcan Humanists: John Sloan and Jerome Myers” from February 5 through March 12, 2010. Co-sponsored by the Judaic Studies Program at the University of Scranton, this exhibition features paintings, drawings, and prints on loan from the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; Kraushaar Galleries, LLC, New York, NY; Ken Ratner, and Barry Downes, New York, NY; the Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington, DE; the Madron Gallery, LLC, Chicago, IL; and Stevens Fine Art, Phoenix, AZ. In January, theElectric Theatre Company presents Mark Twain’s ‘The Diaries of Adam and Eve’ by David Birney. This is a Regional Premiere directed by Barbara Blackledge and featuring Heather Stuart & Conor McGuigan.
This delightful adaptation of Mark Twain’s stories is set in a formal garden as the first couple struggles to come to grips with creation. Adam is puzzled by the odd new arrival in the garden, and is suspicious of her disturbing appetite for fruit. Eve, believing herself to be a kind of experiment, is curious about the other experiment in the garden, surmising that it might be a rather strange genre of architecture. Eve gives names to everything and, as Adam tries to ignore this, she seeks companionship among the animals — particularly with a certain snake. Twain’s characters are as charming as they are human, and the play, filled with his wit and humor, also touches us and tells us something about how we live.

Frank Goryl was featured in an article in the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader concerning his recent show at the Paper Kite Press Studio & Gallery in Kingston. Frank and his family had a 18-week sabbatical in Italy earlier this year. As for Goryl himself, he was in a kind of artistic heaven. “I didn’t have to teach. I didn’t have to work. I was able to concentrate on my art all the time.”
The pottery Frank Goryl had on display at the Paper Kite Gallery in Kingston was crafted using a raku technique, in which smoke from smoldering straw helped create the design. Goryl, who teaches art at Keystone College in LaPlume, has never exhibited raw clay before, and he doesn’t know how long it will hold up. He anticipates the tile will eventually disintegrate, and that’s fine with him.
