There will be an Opening Reception on February 21 from 4-6 PM, and an Artist’s Presentation on February 22 at 9:45 AM in the Hibbard Center.
Loving’s work divides into two groups: poetic elegies to the fragility of nature, and works that evoke a more mythic quality, through the adhering of plant or animal parts to human forms. Her treatment of the cycles of nature is about the cycles of our own nature and of the human condition. This is most evident in those works that combine human forms with plant or animal parts.

The Art of the Brick® at the Everhart

Have you ever wondered what you could build with thousands of LEGO® bricks? Visit the Everhart Museum beginning February 5, 2010 to find out when it opens its new temporary exhibit, The Art of the Brick®. This traveling exhibition, on loan from artist Nathan Sawaya, will be on display at the Everhart through May 2, 2010.
The Art of the Brick® is the first major museum exhibition in the United States to focus exclusively on the use of the popular LEGO building block as an art medium and New York-based lawyer turned artist Nathan Sawaya takes it to new heights. The exhibit features 29 works created solely from standard LEGO bricks over the period 2002-2007 with several new ones created specifically for this exhibit. Nearly one million colorful LEGO pieces which have been transformed into whimsical and awe-inspiring images will be on display.
Sawaya’s ability to transform this common toy into something meaningful, his devotion to spatial perfection and the way he conceptualizes action, enables him to elevate what almost every child has played with into the status of art.
For more information on Sawaya and his exhibition, visit www.brickartist.com.
The Art of the Brick marks the opening of the Everhart Museum’s 2010 exhibit calendar and while on view, will be thematically complemented by the Gallery One exhibition, Brick Creations: Student Art at the Everhart, and Isaiah’s Corner: Build It!, in the Interactive Children’s Gallery. Brick Creations highlights the work of area students who were invited to create artworks inspired by real or imaginary LEGO creations.
Closed during the month of January, the Everhart Museum will reopen on February 1, 2010 For more information, contact the museum at 570-346-7186 or email general.information@everhart-museum.org.

Brian Wood at the Sordoni

The Sordoni Art Gallery opens the exhibition, Brian Wood, on Monday, January 18, with a reception for the artist on Friday, January 29, from 5-7 p.m. The exhibition will be on view through Sunday, March 14, 2010.
Brian Wood is an artist working with multiple media in New York City. His paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs are exhibited internationally and are held in numerous private and public collections. Wood is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and many others. Wood uses multiple media to foreground differing awareness in his ongoing exploration of consciousness. He uses different media to both stimulate and respond to various states of mind and multiple levels of thought. The literal is dissolved through metaphor and illusion. Just as trauma can imagine itself into ecstasy, these works transform matter, body, and mind through imagination. Rooted in our biological ground, Wood’s pieces are markers on the shifting borders of self and world.
The Sordoni Art Gallery exhibition, featuring 28 works ranging in date from 2000 to 2008, and borrowed from several private collections around the country, including the artist’s own, will be accompanied by a full-color catalogue with an essay by New York poet, Christian Hawkey. “We are absolutely thrilled to have Brian Wood exhibit here at the Sordoni,” said Brittany Kramer DeBalko, Interim Director of the Sordoni Art Gallery.
The Sordoni Art Gallery is open to the public and is located at 150 South River Street in the Stark Learning Center on the Wilkes University campus. The Gallery is open daily, from 12 noon to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call 570-408-4325.

Ashcan Humanists: John Sloan and Jerome Myers at the U. of Scranton

Ashcan Humanists: John Sloan and Jerome Myers

February 5 through March 12, 2010

During the first decades of the twentieth century, artists John Sloan (1871-1951) and Jerome Myers (1867-1940) lived and painted in New York City. Turning their attention to subjects such as immigrants shopping from push carts on the Lower East Side and families asleep on city rooftops, they were among the first to challenge what had been considered the proper subjects for art at the time. Soon recognized as painters of the Ashcan School, the artists developed a lasting friendship, grounded in their shared human-ist ideals and their love of the city.
The Hope Horn Gallery at the University of Scranton will be hosting an exhibition entitled ‘Ashcan Humanists: John Sloan and Jerome Myers” from February 5 through March 12, 2010. Co-sponsored by the Judaic Studies Program at the University of Scranton, this exhibition features paintings, drawings, and prints on loan from the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; Kraushaar Galleries, LLC, New York, NY; Ken Ratner, and Barry Downes, New York, NY; the Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington, DE; the Madron Gallery, LLC, Chicago, IL; and Stevens Fine Art, Phoenix, AZ. It is accompanied by a full-color catalogue featuring essays by Ken Ratner, guest curator and collector; and Dr. Bennard Perlman, noted author and scholar of the Ashcan School.
